Súrmjólk

Súrmjólk is actually soured milk or, as called by others, yogurt made in the Icelandic way. Although the name of sour milk fits better than yogurt, as súrmjólk has a rather liquid consistency, in comparison with the thicker and more coagulated consistency we see in yogurt. It is quite acidic, so not everybody enjoys the flavor and taste of súrmjólk. In fact, it takes a while to get used to it, while some never get too fond of this particular product. It is usually served for breakfast, as a companion for cereal, bread, or cheese, but it can also be served with meat or even herring. This sour drinkable fermented milk product is rich in acidophilus and bifidus, two types of bacteria that are known to improve our digestive processes and protect our organism. In case you are in Iceland, you will be able to find súrmjólk in stores, packed pretty much like milk, in a cardboard box, and available in various flavors as well.
