Fermented Milk Products from All Over the World. Lassi (India)
Lassi is a refreshing yogurt-based beverage that is ideal for the warm weather of India. It can be served in a variety of ways, meaning that many ingredients can be added to add a new and enjoyable twitch to the beverage. The process of making lassi is rather simple. Plain yogurt is blended with water, and spices may be added as an optional note. Traditional lassi is consumed with a pinch of salt or by being flavored with roasted cumin that was ground into a fine powder. But, it is not uncommon to find lassi mixed with other spices as well, or with fruits, like mango, strawberry, or lemon. Thus, you can easily prepare lassi at home, with the help of a blender. For 1 and 1/3 cups of plain yogurt, you will have to add 1 and ½ cups of water into the blender. You can also add a bit of salt, ice cubes, and two tablespoons of sugar if you want it sweet. This is the simplest way to make lassi, but feel free to experiment various recipes, with ground cumin, coriander, ginger, green chilies, saffron, mango, and other ingredients, according to your preference.
This is a highly appreciated beverage in India, due to its refreshing flavor, but also for its health-related benefits. When drinking lassi, just like in the case of other dairy products, you introduce good bacteria into the body, which aid digestion, improve the immune system, and reduce acidity in your stomach. Lassi is also rich in calcium, vitamins A and B, riboflavin, and proteins, so besides quenching your thirst, it can also represent the ideal snack on a hot summer day.
