Fermented Milk Products from All Over the World. Doogh (Iran)

Doogh

Called by some the “Persian coke”, doogh is a fizzy drink made out of fermented milk. Doogh is highly appreciated due to the fact that it is light and refreshing, being ideal on a hot summer day or to help you find some comfort after a consistent meal. It is also believed that this drink has several health benefits, such as supporting digestion, preventing inflammation, and boosting the immune system. Well, no matter how you put it, most people in Iran will prefer a glass of doogh instead of any other fizzy drink that may be available on the market. This beverage is extremely simple to make, as you need just yogurt, water, dried mint, and some ice cubes if you prefer. To have a clearer view of the right proportions, you need to know that you’ll have to use 3 cups of water for every cup of yogurt. Also, by mixing 3 cups of water with 1 cup of yogurt, you will instantly prepare 4 generous glasses on doogh on the spot. Mix the yogurt with the water, and then add salt to taste and dried mint flakes, and stir well. Finally, add the ice cubes to the mixture or allow the doogh to sit in the fridge until you serve it. You can find it in Iran packed in glass bottles that resemble those of Coca-Cola very much, although doogh is a much healthier alternative to soda. It contains good bacteria that aid our organism, while still having that carbonated texture of a soda. So, don’t hesitate to have a glass of doogh while enjoying a kebab or other meals with meat.
